Program description

The School of life sciences at EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne), invites nominations of an early career scientist with exceptional promise to become an EPFL Life Sciences Independent Research (ELISIR, formerly ELIFR) scholar.

The position offers a final year doctoral student or recent PhD graduate with a track record of excellence and creativity the opportunity to work as an independent principal investigator leading a small team to conduct innovative research in any area of life sciences. Nominations in computational biology are particularly encouraged.

ELISIR scholars have an independent research budget, access to state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure and in addition to a mentorship program. The position is designed to serve as an attractive springboard for scientific and career development. ELISIR scholars are not tenured and appointed for an initial period of 3 years, which can be renewed for another 2 years. The scholars do not have mandatory teaching duties and have the opportunity to seek additional external funding.

ELISIR scholars are expected to participate in the scientific activities of the EPFL School of life sciences. The vibrant interdisciplinary research community at the School fosters interactions with allied disciplines on campus, including engineering, physics, chemistry and computer sciences.
